Dietician or Nutritionist?

What's the difference between a dietician and a nutritionist?
What you need to know before consulting a nutrition professional

When it comes to health and well-being, it's crucial to ensure that the advice you receive is provided by qualified, competent professionals. In Switzerland, there are two commonly used professional titles in the field of nutrition: dietician and nutritionist. However, it is essential to understand the distinction between these two titles, as they are not interchangeable and do not always reflect the same level of training and competence.

Dietician

The professional title of dietician is strictly regulated and protected in Switzerland. To use this title, a person must hold a Bachelor's degree in Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized Swiss university of applied sciences. Dieticians have the official academic title "BSc Nutrition and Dietetics" or the title of the former training programme "dietician dipl. ES". This means that dieticians have undergone specialized university training in nutrition, and possess the knowledge and skills needed to provide appropriate, personalized dietary advice.

Nutritionist

On the other hand, the term nutritionist is not protected in Switzerland, which means that anyone can use it without having undergone specific training in nutrition. This can lead to confusion for the public, as people presenting themselves as nutritionists may have varying levels of training and expertise in nutrition. It is therefore important to be vigilant and check a professional's qualifications and experience before seeking their advice on nutrition.
